We are so thankful to all of our veterans for their service and dedication to our country. Due to COVID restrictions we will not be hosting our Annual Veterans Day Program on campus however we will be streaming our program online. In honor of our Veterans' generosity, we will be having a special drive -thru breakfast on Wednesday, November 11th, 2020 starting at 8:00 a.m. for our Veteran’s and one guest.

Pledge & Invocation - Haylee Vass

Good morning, as Principal of Todd County Central High School, I would like to welcome everyone to our Annual Veterans day Program.

We are here today to honor our heroes, to remember their achievements, their courage and their dedication, and to say thank you for their sacrifices.  We stand in the mist of patriots and the family and friends of those who have nobly served.

The writer Michel de Montaigne once said, “Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul.”

At this time I would like to call forward Mr. Lee Quarles, our Assistant Principal for the recognition of our Veterans.

At this time we would like to honor each branch of our military by calling on them.  the members of the Army, we thank you for your service.  the members of the Navy please rise, we thank you for your service. the members of the Marines, we thank you for your service. the members of the Coast Guard, we thank you for your service. the members of the Air Force, we thank you for your service.

At this time we would like to recognize the family member of any service member. We know you have lived through difficult times and often have taken the heavy load to keep the home fires burning.  Thank you for what you’ve done.

WWI Colonel John McCrae, a surgeon with Canada’s first Brigade Artillery expressed his grief over the row on row of graves of soldiers who had died on Flanders battlefields located in a region of Western Belgium and northern France.  The poem he wrote presented a striking image of the bright red flowers blooming among the rows of white crosses and became a rallying cry to all who fought in the First World War. 
McCrae’s poem had a huge impact on two women, one of whom was from Georgia, they both worked hard to initiate the sale of artificial poppies to help orphans and others left destitute by the war.  The first sale in the U.S. was in 1920, with the help of the American Legion, the poppy became well known as the “flower of Remembrance.”

The Poppy should be worn on the right side.

The Red represents the blood of those who gave their lives.

The Black represents the mourning of those who didn’t have their loved ones return home.

The Green leaf represents the grass and crops growing and future prosperity after the war destroyed so much.

The Leaf should be positioned at 11 o’clock to represent the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month, the time that WWI formally ended

Our country’s military has left a legacy like no other fighting force ever assembled.  The uniforms they wear, and the flag they carry, are held in esteem wherever they have served.  And that is their finest tribute: Across the world, to people who struggle and suffer, the sight of an American in uniform has meant hope, relief, and deliverance.  For that, we honor all Veterans today.

Abraham Lincoln once said:
Let us have faith that right makes might: and in that faith let us dare to do our duty as we understand it.
