12,000 Students Headed to Rupp Arena for STLP State Championship Thursday

(FRANKFORT, KY) – Nearly 12,000 students, educators, volunteers, community members and parents are expected to converge on Lexington for Kentucky’s annual Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) State Championship on Thursday, April 18.

P-12 students from across the state will show what they know and can do with technology in arts, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and demonstrate many career ready skills by participating in nearly 50 different competition areas.

More than 650 STLP projects will be on display in Heritage Hall, Bluegrass Ballroom and the Rupp Arena lobby area. There also will be almost 300 digital product finalists and more than 20 live performance categories that challenge students to demonstrate specific technology skills on demand.

STLP students create projects, products or services as part of the program and demonstrate their learning by competing in various event categories, including instructional, technical or community development projects; digital content creation such as digital art, photography, design, programming, app development and robotics; and technical services, like student help desk, network engineering and wireless applications. Students with the best projects, products and services have been invited to compete at the STLP State Championship.
The state championship is almost entirely run by volunteers from across Kentucky; including the dozens of students that comprise the STLP Student Service Corps. These student leaders provide media coverage via STLP media outlets, produce a documentary of the day’s events, manage production and live video broadcasts, while also providing all technical support for participants at the event. Working with volunteer professionals from the worlds of network engineering, systems management, higher education and educational technology fields, the STLP Student Service Corps are the backbone that helps create an incredible day for everyone attending.
With 496 schools from 103 districts competing, the event is open to the public between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET.

South Todd Elementary Competed in Lego Robotics, while Todd County Middle School and Todd County Central High School competed in the Showcase category. We are so proud of each of our students and coordinators for their dedication, time and effort to this event.

STLP is open to all students, P-12, and taps into their interests by challenging and motivating them to explore new ways of learning and helping their school and community. KDE’s Office of Education Technology (OET) sponsors STLP events to highlight the creative, logical and often entrepreneurial talents of students across the Commonwealth.
