America's Safe Schools Week

America's Safe Schools Week

October 21-27, 2018

The National School Safety Center, state governors and state school superintendents sponsor America's Safe Schools Week, October 21-27, 2018. This observance is also actively supported by local, state and national public officials and professional organizations.

Significant progress is being made to ensure that all of our nation's schools are safe, secure and productive. At the forefront of this movement are hundreds of exemplary school, district, state and national programs. To recognize these successes and encourage others, October 21-27, 2018, has been proclaimed America's Safe Schools Week. NSSC invites you to participate in this annual observance that was originally established by the National School Safety Center in 1984.

NSSC's goal in this campaign is to motivate key education and law enforcement policymakers, as well as students, parents and community residents, to vigorously advocate school safety. School safety includes keeping campuses free of crime and violence, improving discipline, and increasing student attendance. School that are safe and free of violence, weapons and drugs are necessary to ensure the well-being of all children and the quality of their education.

Todd County Schools employs one school resource officer (SRO/Police Officer) and works in conjunction with the Elkton Police Department, Todd County Sheriff’s Department, and Kentucky State Police to maintain safe and secure facilities. Our Todd County SRO covers every school in the county and is responsible for enforcing all local, state and federal laws.

Officer Tracey Mayberry is the assigned School Resource Officer for Todd County School District.  She is assigned primarily at the Todd County Central High School however, as the SRO she maintains a presence at all schools in Todd County School District.  Officer Mayberry has lunch on campus, interacts with the students, teaches classes related to law enforcement, and the responsibility of citizenship.  Officer Mayberry provides a visible deterrent to crime and a positive representation of the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. Work programs such as Art Club, Drama, Wellness, SPA and mentoring students are conducted on a regular basis.  When needed, Officer Mayberry attends after school events such as sporting events, for moral and/or security.

All schools have school safety and emergency management plans and these plans are reviewed with faculty/staff. Drills for lockdown, fire, severe weather and earthquake are mandatory in all schools and are conducted throughout the year.

All school doors are locked to outside visitors and all visitors are buzzed in to a single main entrance to the school. All visitors, this includes parents, delivery drivers, vendors and media, are required to check in to the office immediately upon arrival.

Procedures are in place for drug and weapon detection with students and staff trained to immediately report the location, identity and description of any suspicious individual. Students and staff have received instruction in lockdown, evacuation and other security procedures. All exterior doors are locked, and our staff and school resource officers are available to supervise the buildings and grounds during the school day and as students arrive and depart.

America's Safe Schools Week provides a unique opportunity for each organization to focus on educational issues that directly affect your constituency. We at the National School Safety Center ask you to join the constituents of your state and school community to help the future of this country by observing America's Safe Schools Week, October 21-27, 2018.
